Poor and Needy
Hear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Psalm 86:1 NIV
Poor and needy doesn't sound like much fun, does it? We live in a world that recognizes and celebrates wealth. We glamorize the rich and famous. Whoever heard of the "Fortune Negative 500's"? Which sounds more familiar: "When I grow up I'm going to be rich!" or "I think I'd like to be poor all my life!"?
Yet the Psalmist offers poor and needy as a reason for God to respond. Would God really want to hang out with the less fortunate? Don't those who are "in" usually want to hang out with others who are equally "in"? Why would God want to lower Himself to reach to the lowly level of the poor and needy?
The Psalmist knows how to spur the heart of God! God is not on some ego trip! God is God! He is the owner and creator of all things! He is the Alpha and Omega! He is above all, before all, and greater than all!
God responds to the poor and needy, because in light of who He is a nd who we are....we are all poor and needy! There is none worthy to be compared...not even one!
When we come to God, recognizing that we are nothing without Him; when we give Him the credit and glory due His Holy name; then and only then will God respond to us! God is looking for our undivided devotion!
No matter what you have in your bank account; regardless of the certificates of accomplishment on your walls; you have nothing without God! Nothing!
Call to God today...poor and needy...tell Him you recognize He is everything!
