They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. Men of Galiilee they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven. Acts 1:10-11 NIV
Jesus had given the command, He had left behind His helper, He had left the physical presence of the disciples, and it was then time to get to work.
Have you ever had a project to do and you just couldnt force yourself to get started? I needed to clean my garage. After the sale of our business, my wife and I brought home a half-garage full of boxes of stuff we had gathered over the years. Those boxes faced us everytime we went into the garage. They were always in the way. Those boxes even kept us from parking our car in the garage during the winter months. Still, I just couldnt seem to get motivated to going through the boxes. When I finally did, it wasnt as big of a job as I had anticipated.
The disciples knew what they were to do, but somehow, they just couldnt take their eyes off the sky. Jesus was gone. The physical presence of their Savior was no longer among them. They had worked to do, but for some reason, they needed some encouragement. The angel came and reminded them that Jesus was coming again, just as He had promised. In the meantime, they had an assignement.
Often when someone is mourning the loss of a loved one to death or the break-up of a relationshiop, or any other tragic loss for that matter, they will tend to shut down emotionally. Instead of vibrantly serving God, they continue to mourn their loss. Granted, there is a time for mourning, and it should not be rushed, but there comes a time also when the mourner has to get on with life, because there is much to be done here on earth. If you are breathing today God still has a definite purpose for your life. Maybe this is t he encouragement God wants to bring your way today to quit staring into space, and get busy! Jesus is coming soon and there is work to be done!
