Mustard Seed Thought: Motivation 2

He called a little child and had him stand among them. Matthew 18:2 NIV

Jesus was great with word pictures. The disciples had asked a question they thought was important. Their question, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" was intended to examine their success so far. They had sacrificed much to follow Jesus. They just wanted to make sure their efforts were not in vain. Jesus, to answer their question, brings a child to stand among them.

In Jesus' day children were to be seen and not heard; and there were times they were not even to be seen. Adults had the experience and credibility and they were to be honored above youth and inexperience. Jesus turned the tables on this thought process. He brought a child, one who may have forgotten to wash his hands (if you have children you know what I mean) and began to paint of picture of greatness in the kingdom of God.

For the remainder of this series we will look at the imagery of this child standing with Jesus. Read ahead. Listen for the heart of God. Let's see what God may have us learn from this word picture.
